CHARLIE CHARLIE CHALLENGE!!
ATTENTION PARENTS – PLEASE READ:
I would like to share the following news article with you regarding a game that is being played across the country and has found its way into a few classrooms at Lindemann Elementary School.
Parents Warned About Charlie Charlie Game
June 2, 2015 – 10:38am | By Christine Sampson
A game called the Charlie Charlie Challenge, which multiple news outlets report is frightening kids all over the country, has been banned at the Springs School.
The challenge, based on an old game from Mexico, involves using two pencils and a piece of paper with a simple grid drawn on it to summon a demon known as Charlie and ask it questions. It has drawn comparisons to a handmade Ouija board, with a similar purpose, and has been widely shared on the Internet.
Eric Casale, principal at the Springs School, sent an email to parents on Monday morning detailing the situation, calling it “unsettling” and asking for parents’ help in curtailing its negative impact on the kids. Principals at other schools have since shared Mr. Casale’s email with parents, teachers, and staff in their respective districts.
“We are very concerned since the game seems to be affecting our students’ well-being, especially in the younger grades,” Mr. Casale said. “From what has been shared by parents, the game has traumatized a few students. In some cases it has also caused nightmares. In addition, it may lead to more serious situations with the older students due to the sensitivity of questions they may ask it. We will not condone the playing of this game at any time on school grounds.”
_________________________
As the principal of Lindemann, I wanted to make you aware of this game. Do I feel our students are playing this exact game, No. However, some students may be playing a version of this game. Are all students playing this game? No. Many students have no idea about this game and have never heard of it. Personally, I asked my own daughter (19 years old) and son (14 years old) about this game and they had no idea what I was talking about.
Staff members have reported that they have overhead students talking about the game. As a result, I have visited a few different classrooms and talked with the students about the game and why that game is not appropriate for school grounds or even at home (in my oppinion). We talked about making good choices, being positive and being a good friend to others. I told the students we would be giving our parents an update about this game. I encouraged the students to talk to their parents if they had any questions.
If you wish to learn more about the game or get a better understanding you can do a quick “Google Search: Charlie Charlie”. YouTube actually has videos of kids playing this game.
Please take time to have a family discussion with all of your children regarding these types of games and the impact they can have. Many times our children get involved in a game or situation because their friends are involved. This is a great opportunity to discuss making positive choices for themselves.
I would like to stress that the intent of this message is to keep you informed and updated. I honestly believe if we were to ask our entire student body (700+ students) if they know what the game “Charlie Charlie” is about 98% of them would have no idea because they never heard of it.
As a team, we will continue to work together for the safety and welfare of all our students.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this information.
Sincerely,
Michael Darga
