Lindemann – Biggest Elementary in the district!

K-5 Student Population: 680 Students

Pre-School Program (1/2 Day AM & PM): 150 Students

Lindemann: Total Student Population: 830 Students

Middle School Population: 924 total students.

A little history: Allen Park Public Schools had six different elementary school buildings with an enrollment of 7,000 + students in the 1970’s. Our schools are considered “neighborhood” schools since they were built within the community between city streets. If you grew up in this area, or other surrounding communities you remember walking to school as a child.  I know, I did too.   Because everyone walked to school there were very little “transportation issues”. Fast forward to 2015. Times have changed. Allen Park has three elementary buildings with a district enrollment of 3800+ students.  At Lindemann, we have never experienced such big enrollment numbers.  830 total students attend our programs.  On any given day, we have 725+ students in our building at a time. And, 90+% of our student population is transported to and from school by car.  Our regular K-5 program starts at 8:30 am.  Our Pre-School program starts at 9:00 am. I’m sure you are starting to understand why we have so much congestion around our building during drop off and pick up.  We have a lot of families jockying for position to drop off and pick up their children.

All three elementary schools as well as the middle school face the same problems during “drop off and pick up”.  However, none of those other buildings have outside programs (Pre-School & ECP) like Lindemann does.  We are unique.  All four buildings work together to brain storm new ideas as well as partner with the Allen Park Police Department.  However, our police department is under staffed and assist us when they are available.  It is up to us as a school community to work together in the best interest of our families and our students. Please continue to be patient, be helpful, and be understanding to our situation.

Ways we can work together for a safer and smoother drop off and pick up at Lindemann:

  • Follow the suggestion Traffic Pattern route.  I have attached a copy of this route on our blog.
  • Park a block away and walk with your child(ren).
  • Only use Crosswalks to cross the streets.  No Jaywalking.
  • The Drop Off Zones (yellow painted curbs) were intended for morning Drop Off only.  This allows the parent to pull up and drop off their student.  This is for those parents that do not need to stay with their child until the bell rings and school starts.  That is when we hang the banners and set up the cones.  When picking up at the end of the day, those areas are normal parking spaces for our families.
  • Do you have time to volunteer?  If so, maybe we could establish a second “crosswalk” on Becker near the 3rd & 5th grade doors.  We have safety vests for our Volunteers and can get you a Stop Sign to hold.
  • I’m open to suggestions.  Please feel free to email me.

Together, I am confident we can come up with a win/win solution that will meet our needs as a school community.

Thank you,

Mike Darga

to cross a street at a place other than a regular crossing or in a heedless manner, as diagonally or against a traffic light.
Parents – Please remember that as adults we are Role Models to our children and their behavior.  I understand that it may not always be “convenient” to use the Crosswalks, but Jaywalking is against the law. The reason it is against the law is because it is very dangerous!   Please take a couple extra minutes and walk down the street and use the Crosswalk.  We want to follow safe procedures and show our children through our actions that safety is a priority.  Use this opportunity as a Teachable Moment.  Discuss with your child  why you are using the Crosswalk and not Jaywalking.

 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

On Friday, our elementary staff from Lindemann, Arno and Bennie were hard at work creating math assessments to be used as a diagnostic tool in all grades.  By analyzing the data from these classroom assessments, our teaching staff will be better able to meet all learners at their specific level of need. Mrs. Metzger, Mr. Zielinski the principals of Bennie and Arno, and I  are very proud of our teaching staff and grateful to be working with such dedicated professionals for the benefit of all children.

Parents, we have two full tables filled with Lost and Found items.  Please feel free to come and look through the items.  I’m sure we have something that may belong to your family.  After one week, we will donate all of the items that are left to a local church who assists our families in need.

Welcome back Lindemann families! I want to take a minute to introduce myself and the Box Tops program here at Lindemann. My name is Laura Corradi, and I am Lindemann’s Box Tops coordinator. My son, Gabriel is in Mrs. Bartnick’s 4th grade class. I have been running the Box Tops program for the last 2 years.
For those who may not be familiar, BTFE (Box Tops for Education) is a program sponsored by General Mills that allows schools the opportunity to earn money for collecting the “box tops” from the products you purchase. Each of the box tops collected are worth 10 cents. These add up VERY quickly. This is money that is given directly to the Lindemann PTA. There are no strings attached. Nothing to sell, nothing to deliver. This is the easiest way for our school to earn money for the students and classrooms. Simply collect them and send them to school. This is FREE MONEY!!! Our total at the final collection at the end of the last year was $4543.80! The year before that- $6429.26! That is $10,973 in two years just for clipping the corner of your cereal box! Not just your cereal box, either, there are hundreds of products you use everyday. I will post a link to the list of products that participate in the BTFE program. All we need from you is for you to collect them and send them in with your student.
As we have done for the past two years, there will be a monthly contest, but I have made some significant changes to the way this is being run for the 2015-2016 school year. I spent the summer trying to think of ways that we can include more of our students into the awards process every month. I wanted to come up a way for every student to feel like they are a part of something no matter what their contribution. I wanted a family with five kids in five different classrooms to each have a chance to win every month. This is my main goal. We have done away with the 25 Box Tops = 1 raffle ticket contest each month. It will no longer be necessary to collect in groups of 25 or to label them with your student’s name. Going forward, we will have a monthly classroom contest. Each month, the class that collects the most box tops will win a popcorn party! In addition, at the end of the year the class with the highest cumulative total from Sept.-May will win the colossal pizza party!
There are a few simple things that you will need to do for your child’s class to benefit:
* Please make sure your student puts the BTFE in the classroom envelope. Most teachers have theirs outside of the classroom door. It is not necessary to label the bag or group in 25’s.
* Please make sure they have not expired! BTFE does not accept expired Box Tops.
That is all you need to do! If your student has already turned in BTFE this school year, don’t worry, they were counted. I am combining Sept/Oct for the contest since we got off to a late launch for the program. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. I’m looking forward to another successful Box Tops year. Thank you again for your participation!

Parents, please do not be a Pushy Parent and push past our school safeties at their posts.  Our safeties are doing their very best and do try to use good judgement when they should stop our families for traffic and when to allow them to proceed safely across the street.  We all know the traffic can be a bit tricky before and after school.  When our Pushy Parents feel they do not need to follow the rules and push past, it causes confusion for the safety and the other pedestrians.  We would hate to see a student who doesn’t know any better follow a Pushy Parent into the street not paying attention to the traffic patterns.  As a parent, you are a role model.  Please help set the right example and work with our safeties, not against them.  Thank you ~ The Lindemann Staff.

PARENTS ~ Please do not allow your children to climb on the trees located on our school grounds.

It is not a safe practice and one that we do not want to encourage.

Parents, for the safety of our children we ask that you DO NOT visit your teachers classroom in the morning during drop off or after school during release.  ALL parents are to sign in at the main office.  Parents should check in with our building secretary Mrs. Crete or our student advocate Mrs. Bergiel.  If an appointment has been established, Mrs. Crete or Mrs. Bergiel will call down to the classroom letting our teacher know you are here for your appointment.  Drop off and pick up times can be very hectic and needs the immediate attention from our staff members.  This is not the appropriate time to have a conference with the teacher.

We also ask that you please be patient when picking up your child.  We have seen many parents approaching the exit door calling out to their child before that child is ready to be released by the classroom teacher.  We have a process in place, this process is for the safety of our children and staff.  We do not want our students stepping out of line and going through the door without a staff member visually seeing the parent.  When you call out to your child, you are causing a break in our routine and can cause confusion for the child and teacher.

THANK YOU!

Lindemann Staff

LINDEMANN ELEMENTARY WILL BE PARTICIPATING IN BLUE SHIRT DAY ~ PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD WEAR A BLUE SHIRT ON OCTOBER 5, 2015

THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING.

This past Monday, students in grades 2-5 have been taking NWEA MAP tests in Reading and Math.  We are working out some of the kinks in the revised process to ensure a smooth testing experience and to preserve instructional time.  Thank you for reminding your child that testing experiences like this are one way to give us important information about how to help him or her learn best.  Results will be shared with you as soon as all students finish testing in the next several weeks.

LINDEMANN ELEMENTARY IS PARTICIPATING

We have a box ready near the main office ready to collect all of your used Crayola Markers.

Crayola ColorCycle

Crayola and schools across North America are banding together to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment. That’s why we launched Crayola ColorCycle. Through this initiative, students in K-12 schools across the continental United States and parts of Canada can collect and repurpose used Crayola markers.

ColorCycle is also a great opportunity for teachers and their students to explore eco-friendly practices. Specially developed standards-based lesson plans are available to enrich instruction and promote lively class discussions.

 BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION INFO

Every student loves a good party!  But, when invitations are passed out at school, not every student in that class is invited.  How does that child feel, the one who was not invited?  Will that child now be engaged in the learning environment or will he/she be thinking about the party and why they were not invited?

At Lindemann, we want to create an environment where all of our students are treated equally and each student is part of the learning community.

Parents please do not send invitations to school.  There are many opportunities outside of school that your child’s invitations can be passed out.

Parents, we can no longer accept food items as a gift to the class. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

The Lindemann Staff
