Parents & Guardians,

Please be sure to call the main office if you need to send a message to your child.  Many of our parents are opting to send an email directly to the teacher asking them to relay a message to their child.

However, our teachers are teaching!  Our teachers are encouraged to have direct instruction with their classes throughout the entire day.  Rarely, do our teachers find time to check their email or even voice mail during the school day.  Many of our teachers do this task after school hours.

Parents have expressed concern that their child never received their note.  By the time the classroom teacher found time to sit down and scroll their email messages the students have already been released.  This is not a safe or effective way to properly communicate with your child during the school day.

Please, contact the main office (just like our parents did for us).  Mrs. Crete and Mrs. Bergiel are more than happy to take the message over the phone , write a note and send it down to the classroom to your child’s attention.  This is safe and reliable way to communicate with your child during the school day.  ~ Thank you!

In the Art Room We Need:

CEREAL BOXES!  Each 4th grade student is going to start building a sarcophagus for their mummy, and we will use this thin cardboard to build the structure.  Large cracker or cookie boxes may work too since they are usually made out of the similar cardboard.  Students from any grade level can donate!

EGG CARTONS!  We are very low here in the art room and can always use more to pour paint.

Paint shirts.  We no longer share paint shirts in the art room due to health reasons, so please send your child to school with a paint shirt that they can wear to art or dress him or her in clothing that can get dirty on their art day.

What We’re up to:

  • SQUARE 1 Art fundraiser!  Information on our art fundraiser will be sent home very soon!  The students did self portraits to start the year and Sqaure 1 will be providing each student with a free sheet of stickers with their order packet!   Packets will go home next week and orders will be due Nov. 7th.  Visit www.square1art.com to view the products!
  •  All grades have moved into our 2nd unit of art history, ANCIENT EGYPT!  The kids love talking about Egypt—discuss as a family any facts you might know!
  • Our warbler lives on!  The Detroit Audubon Society will be honoring our Art for the Sky project in November at their annual conference.

THANK YOU on speech bubble price labels

Lindemann Elementary Celebrates!

As the principal of Lindemann Elementary School, I am honored to be able to work side by side with a staff that is dedicated and committed to educational excellence!  The staff at Lindemann Elementary Schoool is passionate about education and our students. It is a privilege to work with parents who are supportive of the educational process and are united as a school community.  Lindemann truly is a very special place and I am proud to be the principal!

As a staff, we are always looking for ways to give back to our students.  For a gift, the staff purchased three different books that will be donated to the media center for our students use in my honor as the building principal.  What a perfect gift!

Thank you ~ Mike Darga.

The Starfish Story…

A young man is walking along the ocean and sees a beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have washed ashore. Further along he sees an old man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean. “Why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?,” he asks. “Because the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don’t throw them further in they will die.” “But, old man, don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it! You can’t possibly save them all, you can’t even save one-tenth of them. In fact, even if you work all day, your efforts won’t make any difference at all.” The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea. “It made a difference to that one.”

Allen Park Public Schools Statement Regarding Alleged Clown Sightings

There has been a wave of creepy clown sightings and incidents around the U.S. and recently in the metro Detroit area causing panic and a social media frenzy.  Because our students are familiar with social media and are watching the news, it is natural for them to become concerned with the issues they are seeing around us.  We have had students express their apprehension and fear and want to make sure everyone knows we are sensitive to this issue. We will continue to be vigilant and ask parents to remind their children not to spread rumors in school or on social media.

APPS has not received any threats to date, nor any reported clown sightings on school property.  Per policy, all visitors must check in at school offices and outdoor recess is closely monitored.  Should you or your child feel threatened or observe suspicious behavior, we ask that you contact the Allen Park Police Department.  In the event of an incident on school property, please contact your building principal immediately.

With the Halloween season quickly approaching, we ask that students do not wear masks covering their face while on school property.  We recognize that Halloween is an exciting time for students, but ask that students behave responsibly at school.  Dressing as a clown may be intended as a joke; however, intentions could be easily misconstrued in light of the national attention this issue is receiving.

As always, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority.  We thank you for your cooperation in not feeding this social media frenzy.

Mileage Club 2016

Thursday, September 22nd will be the kickoff day for Mileage Club.  Every Tuesday and Thursday until October 20th. (Rain Day make-up)  As in previous years, students are given the opportunity to walk or run during their lunch recess.  This program promotes health and fitness in grades K-5.  The Mileage Club course will be supervised by parent volunteers.  The course is located around the field behind the school.   A foot charm will be given for each 1 mile (4 laps around) your child completes by his/her teacher each week.  The foot charms can be placed on a chain that they will be given after the first week.  At the end of the Mileage club, winners will be decided based on overall laps.  There will be only 1 prize per 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.  In the case of a tie, a name will be randomly drawn for each place.

Please remind students:

PBIS is an expectation while participating in Mileage Club.

4 feet checked off their tracking card = 1 mile and a foot charm (teachers will pass out charms once   a week)

You must carry your tracker card on the course.

Lost charms and/or chains WILL NOT be replaced.

You can walk or run the course.  Kindergarten must walk only.

You MUST stop and have a volunteer mark your tracker card after EACH lap at the Start/Stop cone.       Only a volunteer may mark you card.

You must complete the full lap for it to count.

No corner cutting!  Your lap will not be counted.

The last 5 minutes of recess you will be asked to return to the playground.

Each Kindergarten class is required to have at least 2 parent volunteers to walk with the students.  Lunch Aides are welcome to join students or monitor the playground.  Volunteers will be available at approximately 11:00am until 1:10pm Tuesday and Thursday through October 20th.

Thank you for your support!

no dogs allowed

Good afternoon –

I would like to ask our parents to please not bring their dogs to school during drop off and pick up times at Lindemann Elementary School.  The main office has received many different complaints about several different dogs (both small and large) that are causing some anxiety with many of our students and parents.

As the building principal, I am entrusted to create a safe school environment for our school community. During the end of the school day we release around 700 students at one time.  As parents, we all know it’s a bit hectic on school grounds during that time of the day.  Even our best trained dogs can get a bit jumpy at times. I would hate to find out one of our school community members were injured due to a dog bite, scratch, etc.

Parents – please do not take matters into your own hands by confronting other adults regarding our request to not bring dogs on the property. Please continue to express your concerns to the main office so we can reach out to those individuals.

I appreciate your cooperation and understanding.  If you have any concerns please feel free to contact my office so we can further discuss this issue.

Thank you,

Mike Darga, Principal

DIBELS ASSESSMENTS

Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) Next is a standardized set of general reading outcome measures. The measures assess for(depending on grade) phonological awareness, alphabetic principle, accuracy and fluency with connected text, vocabulary, and comprehension. The measures are designed to be short (1-3 minutes) and can be used as a universal screener, as well as a progress monitoring tool. The purpose is to identify students at-risk of not meeting grade level reading benchmarks and to provide such students targeted supports immediately.

This year, we will be administering the DIBELS in grades K-5. The number of tests per student will vary based on grade level.  A team of trained staff will be administering the DIBELS this fall.  On the days of assessment and the day and time (AM or PM) you can expect students to be pulled for assessment from their class. Once again, these are very brief assessments and will take less than 3-5 minutes per student. The 4th and 5th grade DAZE portion will be administered as a whole class. With instruction the exercise takes approximately 5 minutes.
