 Christmas Stories with Mr. Darga

I really enjoyed visiting classrooms and spending time with our students before our winter break. During my visit, I read stories, passed out candy canes and talked about the story’s message. As the building principal, I could not be prouder of our students at Lindemann elementary.  We all agreed, it is not what is under the Christmas tree that’s important, it’s THE PEOPLE around it that matters most.

Wishing you and your family the very best this holiday season!

Snow Policy

As we have already been hit with one snowstorm, more is always on its way.  As far as snow goes at Lindemann, please read the following:

1. As long as our play areas have been treated, we will continue to go out throughout the winter (as long as the wind chill/temp stays at or above 20 Degrees).

2. Students who wish to be in the snow should at a minimum be in boots and protective leg wear to keep them dry.  This prevents large amounts of students from needing a clothing change, and missing class time.   Students who are not wearing protective covering for the snow will be required to stay out of the snow for recess.

3. Snow stays on the ground.  Please talk with your child about the dangers of throwing snowballs, which can sometimes contain ice.  Students are free to build a snowman or snow fort, etc., things that keep the snow on the ground.

All of these rules apply before/after school, lunch, recess and walking home from school.

New Year 2016

New Resolutions

AAEAAQAAAAAAAADzAAAAJGQ1ZGE2YjBlLThmMWYtNDA0NS1iOTMwLWQ0OTkxZjA4NWI4Yg

Everyone thinks of changing the world, but so few think of changing themselves first.

How disappointed would you be to get to the end of your life and discover that you were made to be great while all you did was wait around?

It’s time to get present, challenge yourself, and change things for the better!

Will you be able to change everything?  No.  In fact there may be lots of things you want to change that can’t be changed.  But YOU can still change!

Even when you are no longer able to change a situation, you are challenged to change yourself.  And that makes all the difference in the world.

With this simple truth in mind, here are my challenges to you for the upcoming month – a positive to-do list for 30 days of personal greatness:

  1. When a new day begins, challenge yourself to smile genuinely and gratefully.
  2. When you don’t get what you want, challenge yourself to appreciate that there are lots of people in this world who will never have what you have right now.
  3. When holding on no longer seems reasonable, challenge yourself to appreciate the fact that nothing in life is permanent, and to realize that once you embrace this you can do almost anything you wish because you’re not trying to hold onto anything anymore.
  4. When you catch yourself thinking the grass is greener elsewhere, challenge yourself to water the grass you’re standing on.
  5. When you absolutely can’t control what’s happening to you, challenge yourself to control the way you respond to what’s happening – in your response is your power.
  6. When it seems like problems are stacking up, challenge yourself to face these problems positively.
  7. When there seems to be little hope, challenge yourself to find some.
  8. When the road ahead seems too rough, challenge yourself to acknowledge that there’s absolutely nothing about your present circumstances that prevents you from making progress, one small step at a time.
  9. When you catch yourself overthinking things, challenge yourself to take a step forward instead.
  10. When you are completely uncertain about what the future will bring, challenge yourself to make the best and most positive use of the present.
  11. When you have two good choices, challenge yourself to go with the one that scares you the most, because that’s the one that is going to help you grow.
  12. When you are going to do something – anything at all – challenge yourself to do it with enthusiasm and devotion.
  13. When others say your ideas are crazy, challenge yourself to do what feels right anyway, to not care if your goals seem crazy to others, and to remember that the crazy ideas are the ones that often have the greatest impact.
  14. When there are lots of excuses for why you can’t get it done, challenge yourself to focus on all the reasons why you must make it happen.
  15. When you find yourself wishing for instant gratification, challenge yourself to admit that if you could have it all instantly, it would not be worth having – for the real value of accomplishment is in the accomplishing.
  16. When mistakes are made, challenge yourself to learn from them, laugh about them, and waste not a minute on past outcomes you can’t control.
  17. When you find yourself trying to control too much, and thus enjoying too little, challenge yourself to let go, relax, take a deep breath and appreciate “what is” for a while.  (Read Loving What Is.)
  18. When there is needless drama and negativity surrounding you, challenge yourself to look the other way.
  19. When your own negativity tries to break through, challenge yourself to recall that you are in control of the way you look at life, and then use your struggles and frustrations to motivate yourself rather than annoy yourself.
  20. When you find yourself running in place attempting to fix and fight the old, challenge yourself to build and grow something new instead.
  21. When doing the wrong things is easier, challenge yourself to do the right thing, even if no one else will ever know – because YOU will know.
  22. When you catch yourself praying for an easy life, challenge yourself to pray for the strength to endure a difficult one that’s worth living.
  23. When everything seems jumbled and rushed, challenge yourself to take a step back so you can see things clearly again.
  24. When you meet someone new, challenge yourself to be patient with them, to  pay attention to them, and to remember that everyone you meet has something important to teach you.
  25. When you don’t like someone, challenge yourself to identify an insecurity within yourself that they are triggering.
  26. When someone treats you poorly, challenge yourself to treat them with kindness and respect anyway – not because they are nice, but because you are (and then walk the other way if you must).
  27. When a negative situation gets emotional, take a deep breath, and challenge yourself to remember that inner peace begins the moment you decide not to let another person or event control your emotions.
  28. When someone you meet is lost, challenge yourself to help them find their way.
  29. When a friend falls down, challenge yourself to be the first to extend a hand.
  30. When each day has ended, challenge yourself to appreciate that you have done your very best.

On behalf of the staff at Lindemann Elementary School,

I would like to wish you and your family a Happy New Year!

May you be surrounded by family, friends, good health and happiness.

FRESH AIR & EXERCISE

Fresh air and exercise have been proven to aid in the physical and educational growth of students. For this reason, our school has an outdoor recess program. It is important that children wear appropriate clothing so they can go outdoors each recess. Generally, if a child is feeling well enough to come to school, he/she can go outside for recess.

Many factors are used to determine outdoor recess. These consist of temperature, wind chill factor, and playground conditions. Students will remain inside if the weather is inclement. If the wind-chill is 20 degrees or above the children will go out for recess. Please be sure your child is prepared to go outside during the cold winter months.

toy-drive-holiday

Hello Parents, Staff, and Community Members,

Allen Park High School students, school organizations, and other district schools are working together to help families in need during the upcoming holiday season by collecting toys, books, and clothing. This year, in addition to the toy boxes, the woods class students are building bookshelves which will be outfitted with fabric storage bins.

As in previous years, we need your help! If you’d like to donate new items, or clean, gently used articles, you may drop them off at any of the district schools’ main offices. Monetary donations are always welcome and will help offset the construction costs as well as supplementing any items not received.

If you know of a local family in need who would appreciate help this holiday  or are asking for some extra help for your own family, please contact Mrs. Jeannette MacDonald, counselor at Allen Park High School macdonald@appublicschools.com or at 313-827-1236. All information will be kept confidential.

We hope that you will consider participating this year to help make the holidays of local families a bit brighter.

The annual APHS Toy Drive Party will take place December 8th, from 3-5pm for district students and staff. Join us for cookies and hot chocolate, with a performance by the Jazz Band, as well as visit from Santa! Small donations or unwrapped presents will be accepted at the door. All students are welcome.

Once again Lindemann PTA will be hosting a school wide CHANGE WAR!!  Each Lindemann classroom is being challenged to collect coin donations to help local residents in need of assistance for the holidays. Last year we collected over $3,200.00!! Let’s beat that total this year!!

Our Change War will start Wednesday, November 18th!!

A container to collect the change will be placed in each classroom. Tallies will be counted weekly and the class that collects the most money will win a pizza party!  There will be rewards given to the second & third place classrooms, too! There will be a chart in the main hallway tracking how much each classroom has raised.

This year all monies raised will be divided in half & donated to the Fish and Loaves Community Food Pantry in Taylor, and the Toy Box Campaign sponsored by Allen Park High School.

The last collection day will be Friday, December 11th!!

Let’s Hear The Lindemann Lions Roar!!!!  It’s time to have some fun and open up our piggy banks.  Let’s begin filling up the containers to help raise as much money as we can to help our community feed the less fortunate during this holiday season. (Please keep foreign change, tokens, buttons, etc.)

Happy Holidays,

Kelley Carey

Julie Cooper

Since opening its doors in June 2008, the Fish & Loaves Pantry has assisted more than 4,000 Downriver/ Dearborn Heights households and 13,500 men, women, and children.  We distribute over 1.5 million pounds of food annually. In addition to directly providing food to enrolled clients, Fish & Loaves is committed to increasing the overall resources available to help Downriver families and individuals in need.  With this in mind Fish & Loaves collaborates extensively with other community groups and organizations which share our concern for the well-being of Downriver residents.  Thanks to these community collaborations, Fish & Loaves is able to offer clients supplemental food and household supplies, cooking and nutrition classes, and caseworker services which can help identify other available assistance for Downriver households.

 PTC – Lindemann Elementary School

November 19: 5 – 7:30 PM

November 23: 12:45 – 3:15 PM & 5:00 – 7:30 PM

Parent Teacher Conferences are just around the corner for our parents and students.  This fall, several teachers will be introducing an online scheduling tool called Sign-up Genius.  Other staff members will continue the way we have Traditionally Scheduled our parents.  The teachers were given a choice, both methods are equally effective.  As a staff, we will talk about the pro’s and con’s of each method.  We are always looking for innovative ways to meet the needs of our students and their parents.  As always, if you are unable to make any of the open time slots you are encouraged to contact your child’s teacher.  The staff at Lindemann Elementary School always go above and beyond to accommodate our parents schedules.

  • If your teacher chose to use the Traditional Method of scheduling, you should have gotten (or will be today) an informational flyer with your child.  Please fill out that form and send it back to your child’s teacher.
  • If your teacher chose to use Sign-up Genius, you should have received an online invitation from the teacher to visit their site and pick an open date and time.  I also sent out an e-blast list to our parents indicating which teachers were participating.
  • I’ve created a Sign-up Genius site for my office as well.  If you would like to visit with me during conferences please visit my Sign-up Genius page and set up an appointment.

Founders Day is a reminder of the important role that the PTA has played throughout our Schools locally and Regionally by supporting  Parent involvement and working on behalf of all children and Families. The Michigan PTA will host its Founders Day celebrations during the month of February by hosting a dinner at the Red Fawn in Allen Park on Wednesday, February 24, 2016.  More info. will come closer to the date. If you would like to nominate someone who you feel deserves to be recognized for all they do within our PTA community, please download the attached nomination forms and turn into the Office no later than 11/30. Please label your envelope “Founders Day.” Voting will take place at our next PTA meeting held on December 3, 6:30 pm in the Cafeteria.

Some parents and guardians think that online games are simply a form of entertainment.  However, children also have the chance to exercise important life skills while gaming. They may use their imaginations and employ problem-solving strategies to overcome obstacles. They may also practice their social skills through online interactions with other gamers.

Using instant chat features, forums, and voice-enabled interactions, children can communicate and collaborate with gamers all over the world. Unfortunately, these features can also expose children to people who may not have their best interests in mind.

Risks of Gaming

Many online games have communication features which allow their users to interact anonymously. Some people may take advantage of this anonymity to target children. For example, predators may send inappropriate content or use a game’s communication functions to arrange in-person meetings. Cyberbullies may harass fellow gamers and online scam artists may promise virtual goods in an effort to get credit card information.

Some game consoles allow Internet access as well, so it is important to be aware of their communication features. Predators have sent children inappropriate content through game consoles in attempts to coax them into reciprocating or meeting offline.

Help children game safely

Parental involvement is critical when it comes to helping children game more safely. Take an active interest in the games that your child plays and wants to buy. You can research games’ ratings and content on www.esrb.org. This website is maintained by the Entertainment Software Rating Board which rates thousands of games each year.

  • Know which safety features are available on the gaming equipment that your child uses—a headset may have voice-masking features, for example.
  • Keep gaming consoles in an easy-to-supervise location and be aware of other places where your child may be accessing games.
  • Tell your child never to give out personal information while gaming or agree to meet anyone outside of the game.
  • Teach your child not to respond to anyone who is being rude or bullying while playing the game.
  • Set rules about how long your child may play, what types of games are appropriate, and who else may participate.
  • Have your child check with you before using a credit or debit card online.
  • Check to see if the games your child plays have reporting features or moderators.

Start a discussion with your child

Use these discussion starters to get an Internet safety conversation going with your children. The more often you talk to them about online safety, the easier it will get, so don’t get discouraged if they don’t respond immediately!

  • Can we play some of your favorite games together?
  •  How do you respond if someone bothers you while you are gaming?
  •  How much do you let people know about you while gaming?
  •  What kinds of people do you game with?
  •  Do you feel safe while you are gaming online? Why or why not?

Greetings Lindemann Parents!

I wanted to send out a couple quick updates regarding Halloween at Lindemann Elementary.

  • Friday, October 30th.
  • 2:00 PM.  Halloween Parade.  Outside
  • Classroom parties directly after the parade (classroom teacher would communicate an alternate schedule with their families)
  • Parents assisting with parties MUST be cleared with the teacher
  • Parents assisting must check into the main office after the parade
  • Parents are asked NOT to enter the building before the parade.

Costumes:

  • Students will change into their costumes during their lunch hour.
  • Lunch Aids will assist our students with their costumes
  • All costumes must be school appropriate
  • No guns or weapons of any kind
  • Please do not allow your child to wear a mask.  Masks tend to slip causing a possible trip and fall accident / injury.

Parade Path:

  • Weather permitting.  We will be outside for our parade.  Our plan is to start the parade with our Kindergarten classes.  We will walk through the building picking up our 1st grade classes and exit door # 9 (1st grade doors).  We will re-enter Lindemann at door # 10 picking up our 2nd and 3rd grade classes. We will walk through the halls and exit door # 11 picking up our 4th and 5th grade classes.  We will walk through the staff parking lot to Carter street. We will walk up Carter Street  (in-front of the main entrance) to Wick Street.  We will follow Wick Street to Becker Street. We will walk down Becker Street to door # 11 (5th grade doors) where we will re-enter the building.  Each class will then proceed back to their classrooms for their parties.
  • We will not be exiting and entering through the main entrance.
  • Parents assisting in the classrooms MUST enter through the main entrance after the parade to check into the building.

The staff and students are excited and hope you will be able to join us during our parade.

Have a great night.

LINDEMANN LEADERSHIP

DETROIT LIONS ASSEMBLY

Displaying FullSizeRender.jpg

Roary, the Detroit Lions’ perennial team mascot, gets a roar of welcome from students at Lindemann Elementary School. Over 650 students attended the assemblies featuring lessons from the Lions’ staff in leadership qualities for young people.

Cheers, laughter, raucous noises and a handy memory tool all helped a crowd of elementary school students to learn important leadership lessons from Detroit Lions’ mascot Roary and a friend.

More than 650 students and a Lion’s share of the faculty turned out in a special school assembly for the educational initiative “LEADERs for life,” with guest speaker Chris Fritzsching, director of youth programs for the Detroit Lions.

The appearance is one of many over the past three years at schools throughout the state by the Lions youth program, including some summer camp events, athletic training activities and, in this case, character education.

“It’s a topic that relates to everybody; the kids respond to it and understand it, and it’s pretty exciting for them,” Fritzsching said of the LEADER program. “The younger kids have fun and the older kids react to the message in it.”

Fritzsching took the Lindemann Lion students through a series of “stops” on the path to good leadership — Listening and Learning, Education, Ambition, Discipline, Encouragement and Responsibility.

The character education initiative featuring Roary is primarily geared toward Kindergarten through fifth grade students and is an ideal fit for elementary school appearances.

Allen Park Rotary donates $6,000 toward elementary school literacy

The Rotary Club of Allen Park has donated $6,000 to Allen Park Public Schools toward literary resources for Arno, Bennie and Lindemann elementary schools.

According to the school district, this contribution will enhance their students’ education for years to come.

Supt. John Sturock wrote to Rotary members to express appreciation for their generous donation.

“This is a wonderful example of the success that can be achieved when businesses and the community at large pool their efforts to support education,” he said in his letter.

The schools are extremely grateful, Sturock said, particularly as school funding continues to decline and costs continue to rise.

“Again, on behalf of the Board of Education, administration and the students of Allen Park Public Schools, we thank you for your contribution as well as for your interest in continuing the tradition of an uncompromising commitment to excellence in Allen Park Public Schools,” he said.
