CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF DR. KING

Our district has chosen to be in session on Martin Luther King Day.  This gives us the opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King with our students.  Please plan to take some time on Monday, and throughout this week, to explore his impact on our lives.  Please let me know if you need any resources that I can provide for you.

Much can be learned from leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The leadership lessons he gave the world are as important today as they were during Dr. King’s life. Click here now to download this poster in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

$1,378 in just 52 Weeks.

Here’s a tip.  To make it a bit easier on the wallet, you might want to consider reversing the chart.  Start with $52 in week 1 and work your way down.  It’s tougher to put aside those bigger dollar amounts during the holiday season.  Good Luck and start planning that “weekend away”!

Attention students and staff…

We will be having our 3rd annual Hair Cutting Event at Allen Park Middle School this year on Monday March 20th from 2:30-4:30 pm in the activity room near the gym.  This year, Ms. Kinsey, Mrs. Speakman and Mrs. Brown are all donating their hair! The event will be one week before Spring break so start growing your hair now if you plan to participate!

Hair stylists from Anthony’s salon will be donating haircuts to those students who are willing to donate 8 inches of hair or more. You can still donate if your hair has been colored and/or processed. All of the hair that is donated will go to “Children With Hair Loss” in South Rockwood, and will be made into wigs for children who have lost their hair due  to medical conditions like cancer, or alopecia.

If you are a student who is on NJHS, Mrs. Church has approved 2 volunteer points for you if you donate your hair on March 20th. Please sign up in Mrs. Speakman room 112 or with Mrs. Brown, across from the Media Center, if you are planning to donate your hair.  If you do not have enough hair to donate, but want to support the cause, Children With Hair Loss is always looking for student volunteers at their store in South Rockwood.

Please see Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Speakman or Mrs. Kelly if you have any questions.

some of our Holiday Favorites!

CONGRATULATIONS To Mr. Hoffman and our members of the Chime Choir & Honors Choir!

Members of our Lindemann Chime Choir and Honors Choir (Arno, Bennie and Lindemann) sang  some of our favorite holiday songs last night at our Winter Concert.  The students were dressed in their Sunday best and sounded fantastic.  I would like to congratulate Mr. Hoffman and all of our students.

Christmas Stories

with Mr. Darga

reading-2

I really enjoyed visiting classrooms and spending time with our students before our winter break. During my visit, I read stories, passed out candy canes and talked about the story’s message. As the building principal, I could not be prouder of our students at Lindemann elementary.  We all agreed, it is not what is under the Christmas tree that’s important, it’s THE PEOPLE around it that matters most.

Wishing you and your family the very best this holiday season!

Keep Skills Sharp During Winter Break

Help your child stay at the top of his learning game during the holiday vacation — no flashcards involved!
LEARNING BENEFITS
Hover over each Learning Benefit below for a detailed explanation.
Creativity
Literacy
Compassion

Winter break means a well-deserved reprieve from homework and daily obligations. But before you know it, the holidays will be over and it will be back to the bus stop. To prepare for a smooth re-entry and a successful second semester, don’t let school skills like reading, writing, and math slide completely during winter vacation. Try these family-friendly activities to keep skills sharp:

  • Read for pleasure. Whether your child is in the mood for holiday stories like The Night Before Christmas or the newest installment from his favorite series, winter break provides the perfect opportunity to stash schoolbooks and read for fun. Encourage relatives to give books as holiday gifts or gather in front of the fire (big kids too!) to take turns reading from classic tales.
  • Cook up an easy lesson. Invite your child into the kitchen to help you whip up a special dish — from Christmas cookies to potato pancakes. All of those half-tablespoon and quarter-cup measurements are great practice with fractions.
  • Write thank-you notes. Penning notes of appreciation to gift-givers teaches gratitude and helps polish writing and spelling skills. Not sure what to say? Check out our thank-you note template for wording. One final tip: a mug of hot cocoa can make this task feel more festive!
  • Make the most of car rides. Turn the drive to or from a holiday get-together into an opportunity to practice letters and numbers. You can look for license plates from different states, try to find the alphabet on the license plates, or count the number of red (or white or green) cars you see.
  • Maintain reasonable bedtimes. With no school to get up for in the morning, it can be tempting to let kids become night owls. A few days before school starts up again, ease back into the regular bedtime schedule so your child can start the year bright-eyed.
  • Ask for grocery list assistance. Have your child help choose what to buy, decide how much you need, check your supplies to see what you’ve already got, write or draw pictures on the list, and sort coupons.
  • Let kids help with online shopping. Need a last-minute gift for Grandma or Uncle Joe? Log onto your favorite shopping sites and let your child help you select presents. This helps children work on their computer and research skills.
  • Have a family game night. Chances are many of your family’s favorite board and card games reinforce skills such as counting, reading, and drawing. Gather the group to play games you usually don’t have time for on school nights.

Announcement of New Superintendent

The Allen Park Board of Education is proud to announce the selection of Mr. Michael H. Darga to lead the district as its next Superintendent, replacing retiring Superintendent, Dr. John J. Sturock.  Mr. Darga was chosen from a highly qualified field of candidates following a very rigorous selection process conducted over the past few months with the assistance of the Michigan Leadership Institute.

The Board would like to express heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed time, energy and thoughtful input to the Superintendent qualifications, stakeholder sessions and interview process.

We are excited to begin the next chapter for the Allen Park Public Schools, and believe that Mr. Darga will continue to move the district forward in our efforts to provide a quality education for all students.

Barbara Zdrodowski

Administrative Assistant to

Dr. John J. Sturock, Superintendent

A note from Mr. Darga:

Dear Lindemann Parents and families,

I am very excited and proud to announce that I have been selected to lead our district as the next Superintendent of schools, replacing retiring Superintendent, Dr. John J. Sturock.

My first official day as our new Superintendent will be Wednesday, February 1, 2017.

As parents, you may be feeling a bit anxious on how this will impact our students and families at Lindemann.  Unfortunately, with my new position, I will be stepping away from my role as your building principal. I want to assure you, Lindemann will be a top priority for both Dr. Sturock and I as we work together to fill the role of building principal during this transition.  One possible solution is to bring in an “intern” principal (usually a retired principal) that would work with our students, parents and staff members until the end of this school year.  In May/June 2017, we would post the vacant principal position and go through the hiring process early in the summer.  A new principal for Lindemann will be in place and ready to start the 2017/2018 school year.

This is a “bitter/sweet” message for me personally.  I have said it many times, Lindemann truly is a very special place. I have had the privilege of serving our students and families as the Principal of Lindemann Elementary School for the past 4.5 years.  As the new Superintendent, I will be sure to visit often and check in on our students.  Now and then you may even see me on the corner of Wick and Becker near the kindergarten doors.

I want to say Thank You to those parents who have reached out to me either in person, through email and phone calls to express well wishes, supportive comments and stories of how I connected with their families and children.  I couldn’t be happier to hear that I’ve had such a positive impact with so many, especially our students.

As an educator, I want to share one of my favorite sayings with you.  This is a part of my leadership philosophy and why I walk the halls with a smile on my face each and everyday.

“Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can be.”

– Rita Pierson, Educator

In my heart, I will always be a LINDEMANN LION!

Sincerely,

Mike Darga

ART OF GIVING PROJECT

Art Drop Boxes will be available in our office for collection of this project:
The ART OF GIVING is a project that is very near and dear to my heart, just as ART is at the HEART of Blake. Although this project is very personal, with all of us working together, it has the potential to impact and uplift so many others.  I began the Art of Giving when my boys were small. The Bowman boys, like many chronically ill children, spent countless hours in the hospital. They tire of the many, often painful, procedures; however, these procedures are their means of survival. Art therapy is a very vital part of these children’s care. It creates a positive direction, allows them to express their emotions about their health, and is a different approach to cope through ART.  I have had the rare opportunity to see first hand how amazing art therapy is for these children; please consider joining us during our Art of Giving event, the reward is priceless. ~ Kim Bowman

reflections2013

Congratulations to our 2016 PTA REFLECTIONS PARTICIPANTS!!

pta-reflections-2016PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades and abilities may participate and explore the arts based on the 2016-2017 theme: What Is Your Story?

Below are some notes of encouragement as to why we should be encouraging our kids to participate in the reflections contest each year!

• All children deserve opportunities to explore and be involved in the arts. The arts play a crucial role in students‘ success in school and beyond, enhancing their reading and language skills, mathematics skills, thinking skills, motivation to learn and positive school environment.
• The national pta reflections program is pta’s cornerstone arts program. It offers students the opportunity to earn local, state and even national recognition for original artwork they create in response to a specific theme.
Students who participate are given an opportunity to explore the arts and culture, develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills and recognize themselves as artists
• Families can support their children’s participation by creating time and space for their student to work on their entry, providing encouragement to their child’s creative imagination.
• All artwork ( dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts) must reflect this years theme ‘Let Your Imagination Fly’.

THANK YOU PTA!!

Lindemann Loved the SUPER U! CHALLENGE

PBIS BULLYING ASSEMBLY! Super U! Challenge

Our top character education show for over 7 school years! Energizes students and encourages a safe and positive school environment.

The Super U! Challenge (super YOU!) is an action-packed school assembly that promotes a bully-free school environment by encouraging students to build positive character traits. It’s all about challenging students to become their own “personal super heroes” and let their best traits shine – at school and at home.

The Super U! Challenge is designed after classic Kid’s TV game shows such as “Double Dare” and the current Nickelodeon smash-hit “Brain Surge”. During the 45-minute show, contestants from the audience are invited to take part in imaginativefunny, and wackyinteractive challenges that involve oversize props, creative costumes, and yes…even some slime!

Each exciting challenge is based around a specific message about bullying and positive character traits that reinforces what students hear in school. In fact, this program goes hand-in-hand with PBIS and other character and behavior programs.

Unlike a traditional “quiz show” assembly that requires students to answer questions about curriculum, The Super U! Challenge does not put students “on-the-spot” or require that they have memorized any facts.  The only requirement of the hand-on challenges is that the volunteers (and the audience!) are ready to have fun.  This means students from all grade levels can participate in the show – and as soon as they see the wild challenges, there is never any shortage of eager volunteers.

In addition to encouraging positive character traits, and positive school behavior, The Super U! Challengealso promotes teamwork and cooperation among students.

Topics highlighted in this program:

  • Building friendships and trust
  • Avoid being a bully
  • How your actions build character
  • Honesty
  • Respect
  • Being a part of a community
  • Good Sportsmanship & Teamwork

LINDEMANN COLOR RUN FUN!

hnmlkjigabcdef

Greetings Lindemann Parents!

I wanted to send out a couple quick updates regarding Halloween at Lindemann Elementary.

  • Monday, October 31st.
  • 10:15 AM.  Halloween Parade.  Outside
  • Classroom parties directly after the parade (classroom teacher would communicate an alternate schedule with their families)
  • Parents assisting with parties MUST be cleared with the teacher
  • Parents assisting must check into the main office after the parade
  • Parents are asked NOT to enter the building before the parade.

Costumes:

  • Students will wear their costumes to school.
  • All costumes must be school appropriate
  • No play guns or weapons of any kind
  • Please do not allow your child to wear a mask.  Masks tend to slip causing a possible trip and fall accident / injury.

Parade Path:

  • Weather permitting.  We will be outside for our parade.  Our plan is to start the parade with our Kindergarten classes.  We will walk through the building picking up our 1st grade classes and exit door # 9 (1st grade doors).  We will re-enter Lindemann at door # 10 picking up our 2nd and 3rd grade classes. We will walk through the halls and exit door # 11 picking up our 4th and 5th grade classes.  We will walk through the staff parking lot to Carter street. We will walk up Carter Street  (in-front of the main entrance) to Wick Street.  We will follow Wick Street to Becker Street. We will walk down Becker Street to door # 11 (5th grade doors) where we will re-enter the building.  Each class will then proceed back to their classrooms for their parties.
  • We will not be exiting and entering through the main entrance.
  • Parents assisting in the classrooms MUST enter through the main entrance after the parade to check into the building.

The staff and students are excited and hope you will be able to join us during our parade.

Thank you

Mike Darga, Principal
